Business venture from right field
My fiance is a very artsy and crafty person. She recently made a ring bearer pillow, flower girl basket and garter for a close friend of ours who was getting married. I was amazed at the quality of her work (no bias here, really
) and consequently took pictures of the wedding set she made to post in an eBay auction. Lo and behold, someone bought it, so she made another set and we shipped it (after taking more pictures).
Then another friend saw the first set she made and wanted one to give as a gift. My fiance sold yet another set. This led me to whip up a simple e-commerce website for her: www.elegantweddingshoppe.com.
I also put up another eBay auction, but no one bid this time and the auction expired with no winner. I’ve since listed another eBay auction and we are trying again. This happened in a matter of weeks, but the great thing was, aside from the cost of the ebay/paypal fees and domain registration fee, which totaled less than $20, we didn’t have to put any money upfront to start this business.
I still need to learn how to market better and bring more visitors, but even with just 2 sales, this unexpected and unanticipated business venture is quite exhilarating. And I could use any marketing tips that you have!

The web page is well done and gets right to the point. Your fiance is very talented. As for marketing, all I can say is just do the best you can everyday and go to local wedding shows. They usually hold these at the local high schools.

Thanks! For now, my fiance doesn’t have any inventory. It’s just make it as the order comes in. Perhaps when we have trouble keeping up with orders will we consider keeping inventory.

I’m finding that it’s okay to have a small stock on hand to cart around with me (fortunately, most jewelry is small and portable and easily kept in not-interesting-looking bags to thwart possible thieves!) because it gets people to ask for my business card to look at more of my designs.

Hi Eric, I just came across your site from smartmoneydaily.com, and I really have enjoyed it so far. You seem to be in a pretty similar place as me. As far as marketing, I don’t know if you know about Corey Rudl, and his site: http://www.marketingtips.com. But, he has been around for a while, and I’m kind of tempted to purchase one of his products but am still skeptical. Anyway, this isn’t an endorsement or a plug, just thought I’d pass it along if you haven’t heard of him.

A few things. First, add ‘target = “_blank”‘ to your links so new links open in a new window rather than filling the old window. You don’t want people navigating away from the site. This is actually listed as a best practice on Marketing Sherpa.
Second, the pillows/wedding stuff look great. If you get give one to the styles/living section person at your local paper, you might get some free coverage. That leads me to my final point…
Third, if your fiance is custom making them, ask yourself what would happen if you got some publicity and a hundred order came in tomorrow. How would you meet demand on a reasonable time frame.
