Everyone wants to be free from 9 to 5
Since I’ve started this blog, I’ve come across many many people trying to be free from 9 to 5, in one way or another. Some, like me, are developing a software product; others are studying how to better plan and manage their career/finances; and yet others are doing things way outside my realm of expertise who I can learn from. I thought I would just round everyone up in this post and wish everyone luck in their quest to be free from 9 to 5! If I missed you, please feel free to “advertise” here with a comment on how you’re also trying to ditch the day job.

Hi “Eric”, thanks for the offer to advertise
I’m already free from 9-5. But not sustainably. I teach programming part-time at the local university (which I love doing), and do some short-term contracting (which reminds me why I’m trying NOT to return to 9-5). But I need other income streams to allow me to keep this up.
Plus, I have several circles to square : being in a developing country, wanting to work on writing (mainly) free software, having lots of ideas and chronically little focus, having no business model …
Right now, I want to explore how to turn all these unnusualnesses into strengths, and find projects that can interest and sustain me.
Meanwhile, I’ll write about it, about my software projects, and anything else that seems related, over here :

I’ve always wanted out, but I’ve just recently become more serious about finding a way to escape this type of life. I’m giving blogging a shot just to see what happens, or if it leads somewhere interesting. Strangely enough, I’ve only seen one of the blogs you have listed in this post. I gave up the 9 to 5 thing a while back… I’ve found that it’s become a 8am to 10pm thing now.
But man, it’s worth every second.

Wouldn’t we all love to be free from the 9-to-5? I know I sure would, though I sincerely enjoy what I currently do. Ultimately, I’m working on a book that might help me gain a smidge of notoriety and eventually shake loose from the corporate world. That’s a ways off, so for now, I enjoy the ride and make my seconds count.

I’ve started three sites [2 blog and 1 forum] and a reseller hosting business. Income from these ventures is slowly rising. ETA…post Rat Race = Mid 2006.

About 5 years ago, I started a small web design business. It continues to grow–slowly, but surely (I wish it was faster! LOL!). It is my goal to quit my “real” job eventually and just be self-employed, but I know it’s not going to happen overnight. (Patience is a virtue, right? LOL!)

Well, I’ve been free for almost 6 months now. Loving it!
Thankfully I’ve got a book deal and some other contracts, so I’ve not had to worry too much about finances. It’s been a great period. I’m thinking of going back to work for a few months in the fall / winter, and then doing another book next year.
We’ll see though. It’s been a great, great ride.
